Liver biopsy is the current gold-standard to assess the grade of hepatic fibrosis. Several noninvasive method shave been suggested as alternatives to biopsy. Among these, elastography is a new method to assess the degree of liver fibrosis by measuring the elasticity of the parenchyma. Up to now, liver elasticity has beenmainly measured with sonography (FibroScan). Improved assessment of the visco-elastic properties of the liver might be obtained with magnetic resonance elastography.
