Bioética y trasplante de órganos

ResumenLa donación y el trasplante de órganos han supuesto un enorme avance en el conocimiento de la biología y en el bienestar de las personas al tiempo que han originado preguntas éticas sobre alguno de los aspectos relacionados con ellos. Así, los trasplantes de órganos plantean múltiples cuestiones sobre el significado de la muerte, la constitución de la identidad humana, las fronteras entre los individuos y entre las especies, las diferencias entre la naturaleza y la cultura, el tipo de ciencia biológica y médica que nuestra sociedad desarrolla, etc. Los trasplantes nos dicen mucho sobre nosotros mismos porque revelan valores culturales que asignamos al cuerpo y, a su vez, nos descubren nuevos terrenos sobre los que reflexionar para entender los límites que definen los lazos sociales, y cuestionan muchas asunciones generalizadas sobre la relación entre el cuerpo y la identidad personal.Los éxitos conseguidos en las últimas dos décadas han provocado la extensión de la tecnología de trasplante a nuevos tipos de pacientes y la posibilidad de extenderla a órganos no vitales. Las cuestiones éticas nos obligan a reflexionar sobre cuáles son los objetivos de las cosas que hacemos (y de las que no hacemos) y sobre la forma en que las hacemos para que cumplan unos mínimos éticos básicos y, si se puede, lleguen a ser, además, excelentes. El trasplante de órganos conforma una de las acciones humanas más beneficentes y solidarias que se dan en medio de lo que algunos califican como una medicina excesivamente tecnologizada y deshumanizada.

Organ donation and transplantation constitute a huge ad-vance in knowledge of biology and in human wellbeing but raise multiple questions on the significance of death, what constitutes human identity, the frontiers among individuals and among species, the differences between nature and culture, and the type of biological and medical science that our society develops, among other issues. Transplantation tells us much about ourselves because this procedure reveals the cultural values we assign to the body and, at the same time, opens up new perspectives for under-standing the boundaries that define social bonds. Furthermore, transplantation challenges many widespread assumptions about the relationship between the body and personal identity.The successes of the last two decades have led to the application of transplantation technology in new kinds of patients and to the possibility of extending this technology to non-vital organs. Ethical questions oblige us to reflect upon the goals of what we do (and what we do not do) and about the way in which we perform our actions so that they comply with basic minimal ethical requirements and, if possible, achieve excellence. Organ transplantation has become one of the most beneficent and supportive human actions within what some call an excessively technologized and dehumanized medicine.
