Fractures of the metacarpals and phalanges

Hand fractures and dislocations are amongst the most frequently encountered orthopaedic injuries. A thorough assessment including history, clinical examination and radiological investigations is essential before deciding upon an appropriate management plan. The vast majority of injuries can be managed non-operatively, but knowing when surgery is likely to improve the functional outcome is the key in selecting when to proceed with a specific surgical intervention. This review article aims to summarize the key concepts in the management of these injuries so that the reader can better understand the rationale behind the surgical decision making process.
