Effects of short-term coenzyme Q10 supplementation on markers of oxidative stress and inflammation after downhill running in male mountaineers

SummaryObjectiveTo evaluate the effects of short-term coenzyme Q10 supplementation on the inflammatory, oxidative stress and muscular damage 18–24 hours after downhill running in male mountaineers.MethodsTwenty male mountaineer volunteers in two random homogeneous groups tested the hypothesis that supplemental coenzyme Q10 (5 mg/kg/day) and placebo (5 mg/kg/day) groups. All subjects, after 14 days of supplementation, participated for 30 minutes in the downhill running exercise on a treadmill with a 65% maximum oxygen consumption, slope −15 percent. Blood samples were collected at baseline state before the start of supplementation, a second blood sample collected after the supplementation period and the third sample was taken 18–24 hours after the exercise.ResultsCoenzyme Q10 supplementation for 14 days before the exercise caused a significant increase on anti-oxidation capacity. Coenzyme Q10 administration is considered to result in suppression of oxidative stress and inflammatory reaction. However, the increase in malondialdehyde and decrease in antioxidant capacity was less in the coenzyme Q10 supplementation group than in the placebo group.ConclusionBased on the results, we can conclude that coenzyme Q10 supplementation can, with the increase in the total antioxidant capacity of the plasma, be a marker of unfavorable changes in malondialdehyde of injury-induced oxidative stress in male mountaineer running downhill.
