Difficulty in achieving complete alveolar emptying causes air entrapment and hyperinflation, both static and dynamic. This phenomenon, which has a closer association with dyspnea and exercise tolerance than airflow obstruction, can be evaluated through determination of static pulmonary volume. However, inspiratory capacity, obtained from slow spirometry, provides a simpler and more reproducible indirect estimate of the magnitude of hyperinflation.
