RésuméL’utilisation du laser dans le traitement de l’HBP n’est pas une technique nouvelle. Au milieu des années 1990 déjà, cette technologie avait été l’objet d’un certain intérêt qui n’avait pas abouti probablement par manque de maturité technologique. Depuis peu, un certain regain pour l’utilisation du laser dans l’HBP est de nouveau ressenti par la communauté urologique ayant motivé le choix du thème traité en 2007 par le CTMH. Dans cette première partie, nous traiterons tout particulièrement de la théorie concernant le fonctionnement des différents dispositifs médicaux disponibles sur le marché français. Dans une seconde partie l’aspect pratique de ces dispositifs sera abordé. Il est à noter que les sources principales d’information ayant permis de rédiger ce chapitre sont les fabriquants de matériel eux-mêmes.

The use of laser in benign prostate enlargement (BPE) is not a new technique. In the mid nineties, this technology was already evaluated without success probably due to a lack of maturity. More recently the laser has made a strong come back in the treatment of BPE which brought the CTMH (French BPE committee) to choose it as its main topic during the 2007 French Congress. The first part will expose the theory of the laser technology as a medical tool. In a second part a more practical approach of the equipments available in France will be exposed. The main sources of information which allowed writing this article are the laser companies themselves.
