► Impact of introducing alternate weekly collections of household waste is investigated. ► Reducing collection frequency impacted positively on recycling rates and behaviour. ► Reducing collection frequency impacted positively on productivity and health/safety. ► No adverse impacts on environmental quality and public health were reported. ► The single stream (comingled material, 1 container) out-performed dual stream service.
