In recent years, the IEEE 802.16e standard, also known as mobile WiMAX, has begun to replace the existing wire-based infrastructure due to the high bandwidth, scalability, lower cost of deployment and lower maintenance requirements. In this work, we make two new contributions to this topic. First, a dynamic uplink subchannel allocation algorithm based on a Carrier to Interference Noise Ratio (CINR) value is proposed and evaluated. The proposed algorithm is then integrated with an established scheduling algorithm and the performance of this combination is evaluated within the WiMAX environment. Second, a subchannelisation mapping strategy that improves the throughput of the system by reducing the overhead for Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is proposed and tested. Using an OPNET simulation, we demonstrate that our algorithm achieves better throughput and BER than the conventional algorithms used in IEEE 802.16e systems.
