Effect of surface wave breaking on the surface boundary layer of temperature in the Yellow Sea in summer

► We investigate the effect of surface wave breaking on surface boundary layer. ► Idealized 2-D cases reveal surface boundary layer deepening due to wave breaking. ► 3-D model simulations confirm the role of wave breaking in the Yellow sea in summer. ► Suitable empirical coefficients in parameterization of wave breaking are suggested.
