Measurements of weak layer fracture energy

► The release of a dry-snow slab avalanche is a fracture process. ► The two most relevant properties are weak layer fracture energy and slab stiffness. ► We determined weak layer fracture energy from 150 propagation saw tests. ► The resulting values were on the order of 1 J m−2. - substantially larger than the only previously published value.
