Mode analysis of numerical geodynamo models

► The dipolarity of geodynamo models is caused by only one fundamental dynamo mode. ► There is an energy transfer from the fundamental mode towards higher-order modes. ► This leads to non-dipole contributions of the magnetic field. ► We studied this process applying the mode analysis developed by Hoyng (2009). ► We find satisfactory agreement between theoretical and numerical results.
