A pharmacokinetic study of GC-1 delivery using a nanochannel membrane device

We are faced with the challenge to develop effective long-term treatment modalities to address the rising global problem of metabolic syndrome. In this paper we demonstrate the release of the thyroid hormone analog GC-1 from an innovative nanochannel membrane device (NMD). We showed sustained in vitro release for over 2 months. Release was confirmed in vivo, where we achieved a prolonged therapeutic concentration of GC-1 in Sprague-Dawley rats. The subcutaneously implanted device was well tolerated and able to produce substantial weight loss in less than a week of treatment without major adverse side effects.313
