Physicochemical properties of core-shell type nanoparticles govern their spatiotemporal biodistribution in the eye

Treatment of eye diseases can be significantly improved by providing drugs to specific tissues of the eye. Nanoparticle-based non-invasive drug carriers can make this possible. In this study we developed six core-shell type nanoparticles to understand the effect of physicochemical properties such as surface charge, hydrophobicity and mucoadhesivity of nanoparticles on their spatio-temporal biodistribution in mouse eye. It was observed that the physicochemical properties of the nanoparticles played a crucial role in determining their spatiotemporal biodistribution in different layers of the eye. This understanding can be used to devise drug carriers that target specific tissues of the eye.311
