Uncertainty, inequality and consumption preferences in urban China

► We found that there is an evident consumption difference among urban families. ► Inequality worsened the condition of the families that suffered the uncertainty. ► The vulnerable family was not able to smooth their non-durables consumption. ► Reducing uncertainty and socio-economic status inequality can improve social welfare.
