Incentives and compensation schemes: An experimental study

► We experimentally study contracts that use relative and absolute output of agents. ► We compare these schemes (RPR) to tournament and independent piece-rate schemes. ► Theoretically, RPR outperforms both tournament and independent piece-rate schemes. ► The experimental results are consistent with the theory. ► Also when other alternatives are available subjects are not averse to RPR scheme.
