Structures and biological significance of lactarane sesquiterpenes from the European mushroom Russula nobilis

The chemical defense machinery protecting Russula nobilis fruiting bodies against predators has been elucidated. Intact mushrooms contain velutinal esters, which are enzymatically converted, upon an injury, to different sesquiterpenoids, among which russulanobilines A-C (1-3) are new.
