Production of caloxanthin 3′-β-d-glucoside, zeaxanthin 3,3′-β-d-diglucoside, and nostoxanthin in a recombinant Escherichia coli expressing system harboring seven carotenoid biosynthesis genes, including crtX and crtG

► We succeeded to produce caloxanthin 3′-β-d-glucoside using recombinant E. coli. ► The recombinant E. coli carried seven carotenoid biosynthesis genes. ► Caloxanthin 3′-β-d-glucoside showed potent 1O2 quenching activity (IC50 19 μM).
