Tropinone reductases, enzymes at the branch point of tropane alkaloid metabolism

Two specific tropinone reductases produce tropine or pseudotropine. Enzymes were isolated, characterised, cloned, and expressed from Solanaceae. Stereospecificity of reduction is achieved by binding tropinone in the enzymes' active centres in opposite orientation.
