Total synthesis of alboatrin, a phytotoxic metabolite from Verticillium alboatrum

A synthesis of the phytotoxic metabolite alboatrin 1 is described. An intramolecular ketene-olefin cycloaddition followed by an oxidative ring enlargement was employed to generate the tricyclic ring system.
