On the non-classical course of Polonowski reactions of N-benzylmorpholine-N-oxide (NBnMO)

The Polonowski reaction of NBnMO surprisingly affords tropone (10) and isoindole 11 besides the expected products benzaldehyde and acetmorpholide. The reaction proceeds via two competing carbenium-imonium ion intermediates 5 and 6.
