Halogen-lithium exchange versus deprotonation: synthesis of diboronic acids derived from aryl-benzyl ethers

Aryl benzyl ethers can be dilithiated using n-butyllithium or t-butyllithium. Quenching with B(OEt)3 yields functionalized diboronic acids in excellent yield.
