A simple procedure for the synthesis of γ-hydroxy-α,β-(E)-alkenoic esters: formal synthesis of (+)-macrosphelides A and B

The synthesis of γ-hydroxy-α,β-alkenoic esters using LiAlH4 is reported and then applied to the formal synthesis of (+)-macrosphelides A and B.
