Surface electronic structure of polar NiO(111) films

► We find a new surface state on faceted NiO(111) films using photoelectron spectroscopies and electron energy loss measurements. ► This new surface state is originated from Ni vacancies. ► Annealing or deposition of Ni atoms can reduce these surface defects and result in charge transfer from surface to bulk.
