Spectroscopic studies based on optical absorption, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy were performed to understand the effects of modifier oxides and CuO dopants in glass matrices. Glass with a composition of xLi2O-B2O3-yCuO was prepared with x fixed at 0.1 and y varied from 0.005 to 0.05. The optical absorption spectra were used to determine the absorption band, which was attributed to the 2B1g â 2B2g characteristic transition of Cu2 + ions in the distorted octahedral sites. The values of the spin-Hamiltonian parameters determined by the EPR studies indicated that the site symmetry around the Cu2 + ions was a tetragonally distorted octahedral. The glasses for which y was greater than 0.02 exhibited bands caused by the Cu+ ions in the UV region. The EPR and optical absorption data were used to calculate the molecular orbital coefficients α2 and β12, and the FTIR studies showed that these glasses consisted of BO3 and BO4 units.
