EBSD study of grain growth behavior and annealing twin evolution after full recrystallization in a nickel-based superalloy

The grain growth behaviors of a nickel-based superalloy after full recrystallization are investigated by hot compression test plus annealing treatment. Electron backscattered diffraction technology (EBSD) is utilized to analyze the grain boundary features. It is found that the annealing parameters greatly affect the average grain size, and annealing twin boundaries, including ∑3, ∑9, and ∑27 boundaries. The fully-recrystallized grains can rapidly grow up at relatively high annealing temperatures with the increase of annealing time. Meanwhile, large fractions of annealing twin boundaries form at the initial stage of annealing treatment. However, with the further increase of annealing time, the content of annealing twins slightly drops due to the migration of grain boundaries or twin boundaries. When the annealing temperature is increased, the shape of annealing twin is apparently lengthened while the number of annealing twin sharply decreases. In addition, the kinetics model for grain growth after full recrystallization is established and validated by the experimental observations.
