Prediabetes: Screening, Diagnosis, and Intervention

Prediabetes affects 86 million Americans, predisposing them to type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Evidence-based guidelines recommend risk factor assessment for all children and adults and laboratory screening for those at risk. Lifestyle intervention is the cornerstone of treatment for prediabetes, and pharmacotherapy and bariatric surgery are appropriate for certain high-risk adults. Diabetes prevention should be a routine aspect of primary care, and abundant resources are available for practitioners and patients to develop and sustain effective interventions to prevent type 2 diabetes.
