Characterization of ammonium retention processes onto Cactus leaves fibers using FTIR, EDX and SEM analysis

► Ammonium retention onto CLF occurred for a wide pH and temperature ranges. ► Chemisorption and pore diffusion are characteristics of this sorption system. ► Cracks on CLF surface may allow the pore diffusion and the ion exchange process. ► Ionic exchange by calcium ions and the complexation are main mechanisms involved. ► CLF laden with ammonium could be used as organic fertilizer in arid regions.
