The role of dissolved organic matters in the aquatic photodegradation of atenolol

► The main reactive species in the photosensitization between atenolol and DOMs is OH. ► Dissolved organic matter (DOM) can quench OH and screen light. ► High yield of OH was observed with iron ions and DOM coexisting under irradiation. ► SRFA can promote addition of OH on aromatic ring.
