Non-tectonic liquefaction-induced large surface displacements in the Aso Valley, Japan, caused by the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake, revealed by ALOS-2 SAR

- Three large, independent surface deformations appeared in the Aso Valley.
- Each deformation area moved more than 2 m horizontally.
- Liquefaction-induced lateral spreading occurred in old lake-bottom deposits.
- Thickness and shape of the deposits contributed to the large deformations.
