Separation of platinum and rhodium from chloride solutions containing aluminum, magnesium and iron using solvent extraction and precipitation methods

► Solvent extraction and precipitation methods were employed to separate platinum and rhodium from aluminium, magnesium and iron. ► Aliquat 336 was selective to remove platinum from other metals. ► Extraction and stripping efficiencies were >99%. ► Thiourea and HCl mixture was found to be the best for stripping platinum from loaded organic. ► Flow sheet for the separation and recovery of platinum and rhodium from the chloride solutions was demonstrated.
