► Dissolution and transport of coal tar compounds in fractured clay-rich residuum. ► Initially most compounds rapidly dissolved and were transported through fractures. ► Final compound concentrations did not rise to aqueous solubility levels. ► After 377 days compounds were found diffused into fine-grained matrix. ► Fine pore structure did not inhibit dissolution and transport of coal tar compounds.
