Degradation pathway of pentachlorophenol by Mucor plumbeus involves phase II conjugation and oxidation-reduction reactions

► Mucor plumbeus efficient PCP degradation pathway does not involve ligninolytic enzymes. ► PCP transformation by the mycelial fraction does not require cytochrome P-450 activity. ► PCP-derived metabolites are similar, regardless of the carbon availability. ► Phase II (di)conjugates and chlorinated hydroquinones are PCP-derived metabolites. ► Sulfate-glucose diconjugates are herein identified in fungi for the first time.
