Physicochemical properties of metal-doped activated carbons and relationship with their performance in the removal of SO2 and NO

► Cu and Fe were partly reduced by carbon during preparation. ► Metal-involved SO2 removal pathways were catalytic oxidation, reaction and adsorption. ► Good performances of SO2 and NO removal depended on the metal redox pairs.
