► Hyperforin is an antidepressant drug extracted from a plant. ► By performing in vitro and in vivo experiments we examine the consequences of a chronic hyperforin treatment. ► It changes the cellular zinc load and controls the expression of Zn-binding proteins. ► Hyperforin alters the thiol status of brain cells.
