► Antisense oligonucleotides (AS ODNs) are effective at inhibiting gene replication. ► The AS ODNs targeting RNA binding region of nucleoprotein gene of H5N1 virus. ► The AS ODNs could potentially inhibit virus replication in vitro and in vivo. ► Research suggested these regions of NP might become potential therapeutic targets.
