Cholesterol reduction and lack of genotoxic or toxic effects in mice after repeated 21-day oral intake of lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) essential oil

► The oral LD50 for Cymbopogon citratus essential oil (EO) is around 3500 mg/kg. ► EO repeated treatments do not modify gross pathology, body or organs weight. ► EO repeated treatment also no change histological, urine or blood parameters in mice. ► Blood cholesterol was reduced after EO-treatment. ► Comet assay in peripheral blood cells showed no genotoxic effects from the EO.
