Les phtalates. Point sur la réglementation en vigueur

Phthalates are widely used as plasticizers. The general population is continuously exposed to these ubiquitous environmental pollutants. Some of them have endocrine disruptor properties and are toxic for the male reproductive system in rodents. Several phthalates are classified as presumed human reproductive toxicant (CMR category 1B) by the European Chemical Agency (ECHA) and a few reference values have been established, in particular related to occupational exposures. Steps have been taken at the national and European levels, which restrict or prohibit the use of some phthalates of concern in cosmetics, toys and childcare articles, medical devices, and food contact materials. The aim is to encourage their substitution and reduce the exposure of the populations, especially that of the sensitive groups at greatest risk, namely pregnant women and young children.
