Calcium supplementation attenuates citrate-related changes in bone metabolism: A placebo-controlled crossover study in healthy volunteers

► Citrate anticoagulation during single plateletpheresis process results in a short-term increase of bone turnover and a shift of bone balance. ► The citrate-induced shift of bone balance is marked by an increase of bone resorption. ► Additional supplementation of calcium during citrate application attenuates the effect of citrate on bone. ► Prophylactic administration of calcium could be a potential prevention measure for apheresis donor protection.
