► Nonvertebral fracture risk reduction with teriparatide depended on the set of fractures included in the analysis. ► Lower RRs were observed for nonvertebral fractures most likely to be of osteoporotic origin. ► No significant reductions in traumatic nonvertebral fractures were observed.
