Glutamate-mediated signaling in Schistosoma mansoni: A novel glutamate receptor is expressed in neurons and the female reproductive tract

▶ SmGluR is a novel metabotropic glutamate receptor of S. mansoni. ▶ Heterologously expressed SmGluR is selectively activated by glutamate and signals through an increase in cAMP. ▶ Immunolocalization studies suggest an important role for SmGluR in neuronal signaling and female reproduction. ▶ This study provides the first molecular evidence for a glutamate signaling system in schistosomes.
