► Chronic exercise has a variable effect on weight loss. ► Despite modest weight loss, exercise does not impact appetitive behaviors. ► Chronic exercise was associated with reduction in neuronal response to food, in the posterior attention network and insula. ► Change in BW with chronic exercise correlated with change in insula response. ► An acute exercise bout attenuated the effects of chronic exercise.
