Matrix metalloproteinase-2 deficiency impairs aortic atherosclerotic calcification in ApoE-deficient mice

► We investigated the effect of MMP-2 deficiency on atherosclerotic calcification. ► The atherosclerotic calcification at the aortic arch was suppressed in MMP-2−/−, Apoe−/− mice. ► Cultured MMP-2−/− SMCs derived from mouse aorta inhibited mineral deposition induced by β- GP stimulation. ► MMP-2 may participate in the calcification of SMCs, contributing to the formation of vascular calcified lesions.
