Prefrontal pathways target excitatory and inhibitory systems in memory-related medial temporal cortices

► ACC boutons were distributed throughout areas TH and TF. ► ACC terminations in TH and TF were comprised of small and large boutons. ► Large and small ACC boutons were evenly distributed in TH/TF upper and deep layers. ► Most ACC area 32 targets were unlabeled spines of putative excitatory neurons. ► A number of synapses were formed with inhibitory targets, most of which were PV+.
