► Mentalising brain regions are not typically recruited during perspective taking tasks. ► In this fMRI study, perspective taking was introduced in a communicative context. ► Participants needed to consider another person's perspective to respond appropriately. ► This led to recruitment of mentalising regions including superior dorsal MPFC.
