Influence of temperature on the fretting response between AISI 301 stainless steel and AISI 52100 steel

► Fretting experiments were performed from 20 °C to 550 °C in air and argon. ► Friction, wear, oxide composition, and fatigue damage was characterized. ► Transitions in mechanical properties, wear rate, and oxide composition occurred. ► The fatigue damage response is discussed in terms of mechanisms identified.
