Electrochemical removal of calcium and magnesium ions from aqueous solutions

► Calcite and brucite precipitation occurs on the cathode through the generation of OH− ions. ► For high current densities the electrochemical precipitation rate of calcite reaches a limit. ► The precipitation rate of calcite does not vary with the Ca2+ concentration. ► The electrochemical precipitation rate of brucite correlates with current density. ► With increasing Mg 2+ concentration the precipitation rate of brucite decreases.
