► Postnatal hippocampal cultures respond to OGD in a similar manner as HOTC. ► In mixed culture, OGD leads to death of neurons but not astrocytes. ► Neuronal enriched cultures are more sensitive to OGD than neurons in mixed cultures. ► Primary astrocyte-enriched cultures are less affected by OGD. ► Astrocytes may be neuroprotective following ischemia.
