Locally-generated acetaldehyde is involved in ethanol-mediated LTP inhibition in the hippocampus

► Ethanol induces amnesia via inhibition of LTP, a form of synaptic plasticity. ► In this study, 4-methylpyrazole was used as an alcohol dehydrogenase inhibitor. ► 4-Methylpyrazole allowed LTP in the presence of ethanol. ► Local metabolism to acetaldehyde may contribute to the ethanol-mediated amnesia.
