► Systemic mesenchymal stem cells (hMSC) delivery in a stroke mouse model shows only subclinical effects. ► hMSC do not reach the ischemic stroke area, or the brain. ► hMSC induce neurogenesis at subventricular zone and dentate gyrus by paracrine effectors.
