Effect of acoustic similarity on short-term auditory memory in the monkey

► Monkeys performed a delayed-matching memory task for sounds. ► Matching errors were predicted by acoustic similarity between sample and test sounds. ► Errors were more strongly predicted by spectral similarity than by temporal similarity. ► An intervening sound between the sample and test reduced the similarity effect. ► Short-term auditory memory in monkeys depends on a fragile sensory trace.
